Ed and I have been working on preparing a hike explaining how we get our water in Alpine. We were hoping to share our new information with some community members at the Alpine Nature Center water tour yesterday. This is us sitting at the Bowery at 9 a.m. hoping someone would show up!
We were so happy to have 9 enthusiastic hikers show up, not counting one baby and a dog!
We took them past all above-ground structures that had to do with water. It is amazing to know that 100% of our drinking water comes from one spring at the base of the mountain!
Interesting fact: In the summer we use one million gallons of culinary water a day and 10 million gallons of pressurized irrigation each day!
The culinary system is the more simple of the two. Our chlorination plant is right here in Lambert Park!
Mayor Troy Stout even came along and shared some of the city's perspective on water and growth in the city!
At the headwaters where Dry Creek is diverted we dispelled one giant myth: the city of Lehi doesn't get our water after July 10th, Alpine gets it all! Up till July 10th, some of the water from Dry Creek is diverted to Lehi for pressurized irrigation. After July 10th, Dry Creek is diverted upstream, at the Bear Claw next to Horsetail Falls Trail parking lot. At that point all the water is diverted into Alpine's pressurized irrigation! So don't blame Lehi when our creek stops flowing! It is our own appetite for keeping our lawns green!
All tour participants received an official Water tours pin badge, whether or not they finished the tour! Please join us next year for water Tours 2019!
